MICHAEL DODS is eyeing the Listed Kilfrush Stud Abergwaun Stakes at Tipperary on Friday for speedy filly Mecca’s Angel and the trainer believes she is “a real star in the making”.

Mecca’s Angel was successful in her first two starts this season, including a conditions contest at Hamilton by eight lengths, on her preferred soft ground before finding heavy ground too much for her at Maisons-Laffitte in May.

The ground will determine whether the three-year-old lines up at Tipperary on Friday but regardless of whether she does, Dods is confident there is something special about his filly.

Dods, speaking to the RFO for Trainer File, said: “She’s a very quick filly who has won four times on good or softer. This term she won at Thirsk and Hamilton, on good to soft each time, before I sent her to Maisons-Laffitte for a Listed race over five and a half furlongs. The ground was almost heavy, which she didn’t handle, and the extra half-furlong found her out.

“She’s pure speed and five furlongs is her trip. There’s a Listed race at Tipperary on Friday I would like to run her in, but the ground needs to be right or she won’t get on the ferry. She’s a real star in the making, though.”
