A green lane, which is being sought as an asset of community value, falls into three different local authority areas.
Colin Poole, town clerk, was asked by councillors last month to try and get a green lane, which runs along a 10 space beyond East Town Park, listed as an asset.
But now, steps must be taken to establish to identify the owners as the green lane falls between St Edmundsbury and Braintree districts – and the footpath belongs to Babergh.
“We will have to take advice from three different councils,” he said.
Listing the green lane would protect a 10 hectare space, which is near to the 20 hectare “buffer zone” between the town and Calford Green.
It is hoped that this 30 hectare space could become an extension to East Town Park.
Ian Johnson, who represents a group of 350 people, has been leading the call for Haverhill to have its own country park.
