One of Blenheim’s most iconic motels, Bings Motel, has been put on the market, after its owner, 91-year-old Graham Bing, decided it was time to sell.
Bing has owned the land, buildings and business on the corner of Maxwell Rd and Seymour St for more than 50 years.
Mark Stevenson First National commercial and industrial real estate agent Geoff Dentice was appointed to sell the property, which was listed for sale on July 1.
Dentice said while it was still early days, they had already had interest in the property.
The property was in a “commanding position” on the corner of Maxwell Rd and Seymour St in Blenheim’s central business district and had three street frontages.
Dentice said the land would be a great development site.
“Being right on the edge of Blenheim’s primary shopping area and very close to college and schools this must be the best available location for development in Blenheim.
“Best use may be a commercial and or retail development . . . [and] would be attractive to major retailers and be a very positive extension to our busy shopping precinct.”
The addition of the business would “allow for good holding income”, he said.
Bings Motel had always been a very successful motel business and had been “well supported by the travelling public over many years”, Dentice said.
It was hoped the land, which covers 8263 square metres, the buildings and the business would be sold as a package, he said.
The original buildings were built as woodland flats in the 1940s. The flats were converted to motel rooms during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.
The motel is being sold by tender. Tenders close on Friday, August 22.
Bing could not be reached for comment.
