DEVELOPER City and Country which is carrying out restoration work at the historic King Edward VII hospital in Midhurst has done a land deal with housebuilders to help pay for the ambitious project.

Helen Moore, City and Country managing director, said the sale of the land parcels to Cala Homes and Millgate had enabled City and Country to generate additional funds for the restoration and development of the historic listed buildings, ‘while also strategically aligning three quality developers at a landmark site’.

She added: “We have always been committed to delivering an exemplary scheme of which we can all be proud. The primary focus for City and Country will continue to be the sympathetic restoration of the existing listed buildings, which will bring this significant heritage asset back to its former glory. However, City and Country will continue to retain land for new-build development on the estate, which will be progressed once the restoration work has been completed.”

Cala Homes will be developing a range of three-bedroom mews cottages and four-bedroom detached new homes, ranging in size from around 1,239 to 3,235sqft, at Bracken Lane and Superintendents Drive.

Millgate has unveiled plans for eight homes in Crown Wood. They will be designed in an arts and crafts style and will all feature five bedrooms, some split over two floors and others over three.

Ms Moore said City and Country would be leading the restoration of the listed buildings which included the former sanatorium and surrounding buildings, the chapel, and gardens originally designed and planted by the highly-acclaimed horticulturalist ,Gertrude Jekyll.

She said they would offer a ‘wide range of unique conversions’.

When complete, the estate will consist of 162 apartments and houses in the listed buildings 
and a further 247 new properties in the surrounding estate.

Residents will also have access to a swimming pool and tennis courts.
