Exeter City: Danny Coles stripped of captaincy and transfer listed

Exeter City have stripped Danny Coles of the club captaincy and put him on the transfer list following comments he made towards a fan on Twitter.

Coles, 32, who has also been fined two weeks’ wages,

posted a message using a number of expletives in June.

The defender apologised,

but was disciplined after a hearing on Monday.

“Exeter City would like to extend its apologies to all those who were offended by Danny Coles’ behaviour,” an

Exeter statement read.

“At the hearing, Coles again apologised for any offence taken by his comments and has written a letter of apology to the young person concerned.

“Exeter City Football Club and Coles will now be focusing on pre-season training and the year ahead and will make no further comment on the matter.”

During England’s World Cup game against Uruguay, Coles tweeted: “(England defender Phil) Jagielka is a car crash waiting to happen”, to which a fan replied “so like you for Exeter”.

It was in response to that comment that he used offensive language.

The former Bristol Rovers defender signed a new contract in October 2012, which is believed to run until 2015.
