Spike Abernethy has carefully weighed the options, discussed them with his grown children and other relatives and reached a conclusion: It’s time to sell Evergreen Hill, his family’s ancestral home through seven generations.

The elegant Italianate house stands on Keria Trail southwest of South Bend. The front part of the house was built in 1873 with 11-foot ceilings, parlors, a formal dining room and a sunroom added in the 1920s. The 38-acre wooded property also includes a garage, a barn, a rustic cabin, smokehouse and walking trails.
