A WRITING hut in Georgeham used by the author of Tarka The Otter could soon be a listed building.
When the hut, which belonged to Henry Williamson in the 1920s, was recently sold, it came to the attention of North Devon businessman Phillip Milton that it was not listed. So he wrote to English Heritage, which is currently considering the application.
He said: “While I do not have any particular affinity regarding Henry Williamson, other than recognising that his literature and heritage have a very special place in North Devon, I had concerns when I heard about the sale of his hut and the ground where it stands, which have been retained as a memorial to him.
“It was with great surprise that I learnt that the hut and its fixtures were not listed with English Heritage despite its potential literary and historical significance.
“As a consequence, I completed an inquiry to see whether it was something which should have some preservation and protection in some way, for the enjoyment of future generations.”
English Heritage has carried out its initial assessment of the site at Ox’s Cross, and will soon announce whether it will be given listed status.
