A grade II listed office building could soon have a new lease of life as luxury flats if planning is given the go ahead.

Developers plan to create 14 new homes at Walton Lodge – part of a conservation area on Walton Street, Aylesbury – by renovating the existing building and demolishing the current single storey rear wing to make way for a new sympathetic two-storey U-shaped extension at the rear.

The redevelopment could see the imposing 19th century building – which was turned into office space in 1988 – be transformed into 10 two-bed flats and four one-bed homes with 16 car parking spaces.

The ground-floor apartments will have access to a private terrace, but the site’s existing mature trees and shrubs will remain as part of the landscaped gardens.

Cumming Anderton Architects has been appointed to preserve the building’s character in line with the heritage listing while improving the site’s security and upgrading the building’s energy efficiency.

The plans show that the building’s frontage as seen from Walton Street will remain largely unchanged, and access will still be from William Harding Close as before.

An Ordnance Survey map dated 1879 is the first to show the plot in detail, which shows the building sitting in extensive gardens.

This application is not the first of its kind, with a similar submitted last year before being withdrawn.

Aylesbury Vale District Council is expected to consider the plans on July 31.
