A group of residents say they want a “green haven” in the middle of Thame to be taken out of the official Town Plan.

They fear “The Elms”, a piece of parkland near the town centre, which is left undeveloped, could end up being cut in half by a housing development.

We asked campaigner Peter Webb why he thinks the meadow area next to the park is important:

“It adds to the aparent size of the park.

“People walking their dogs have a view of the fields beyond and the people who use the park value the presence of the open fields.”

The Elms is a 10 acre site in Thame town centre which is also a conservation area however it has been approved for a housing estate of up to 45 houses.

Campaigners say there area number of reasons why The Elms Petition Group are opposing it and why The Group also believes they have most Thame residents on their side.

Elms Field is currently under the threat of development by the owners of the Grade II listed house, The Elms.

Developers, Rectory Homes, intend to apply for a development of up to 45 new homes on this ancient field in the centre of the Historic Oxfordshire market town of Thame.

Petitioners say the field was quietly slipped into the Thame Neighbourhood Development Plan under ‘questionable circumstances’ with residents feeling it is an unnecessary location to fulfill required housing quotas when these could easily be accomodated in other, more sustainable development locations around Thame.

South Oxfordshire Council say the Elms and Elms Park as an “Important open space” and English Heritage are quoted as describing the prospect of housing being built on the parkland as “deeply damaging”.

Campaigners say they’ll continue to lobby their local councillors.

Thame Town Council gave Mix96 this response to the lobbying:

“If any of their statement was correct then the Plan would not have passed an independent examination and the district council and the government would not have allowed the plan to become a legal document.

“The group can put its views to the planning authority to challenge the application when a planning application is made by the developer. The Town Council has nothing further to add.”
