HOLLAND, MI — Pat Eldean is looking for someone to carry on the traditions at her nearly three decade old iconic restaurant, The Piper.
The popular eatery overlooks Lake Macatawa and is often a backdrop for weddings and other group gatherings
This week, an ad for the upscale casual restaurant, went up on Craig’s List, among other marketing websites.
Although a sale price isn’t mentioned, The Piper is described as “a profitable, established and well-appointed restaurant and banquet facility located on scenic Lake Macatawa, just southwest of Holland near Lake Michigan.”
The restaurant, at 2225 South Shore Dr., is part of the Eldean Marina complex, owned by Eldean’s husband, Herb, who was inducted in the Michigan Boating Industry Hall of Fame in 1997. Started in 1901 as Jesiek Brothers Shipyard, the facility is one of the oldest active marinas and boatyard facilities in the country.
The restaurant began as the Sandpiper, an upscale fine dining restaurant, garnering several awards, including Best Restaurant in West Michigan. In 1997, it underwent a major overhaul and the name was shortened to reflect a more casual setting designed to make guests feel more comfortable, according to the restaurant’s web site.
The restaurant, which had revenues of nearly $1.3 million in 2013, has growth potential, for a new owner who would be willing to expand hours beyond dinner, add off-site catering and delivery, maximize outdoor seating areas and better utilized its banquet facility.
Eldean says she is ready to retire, but first she wants to make sure that both her customers and employees are taken care of after she steps down.
“I’m looking for someone who definitely can give our guests and loyal clientele a quality experience, and possibly work with our current employees, who are terrific,” Eldean said.
