Listed Cumbrian hall given coveted award

A LISTED hall has become the first ever property in Cumbria to be to be given a coveted “superior quality” award.

Grade I building Askham Hall, near Penrith, was given the accreditation by assessotrs from Cumbria Tourism’s Quality Cumbria scheme.

The VisitEngland-backed project was originally developed seven years ago to drive up standards of visitor accommodation across the county.

The newly-restored 800-year-old Askham Hall recently opened its doors as a bohemian-style ‘home from home’ and restaurant.

Owner Charles Lowther said: “We’re proud of our creative, artistic and unpretentious style, and Cumbria Tourism’s Superior Quality award recognises the work we’ve done to transform the property for visitors seeking exceptional hospitality and service standards, alongside fresh local produce and a totally distinctive atmosphere.”

Assessor Bill Clifford added: “Askham Hall provides a high-quality product in a unique building and setting, and we’re looking forward to seeing other properties attaining this special accreditation.”
