Development plans for listed Barclay’s bank building in Ilford

A listed Edwardian building that has lain derelict in Ilford town centre for almost five years could be put back into use.

Developers want to turn the former Barclay’s bank in High Road into a shop and seven flats.

Laws prevent most changes to the Grade II listed building but unprotected parts could be demolished and a new four storey extension would be built.

It has been empty since Barclay’s moved in 2009 and an application for a bingo hall was withdrawn last year.

The building, dating from 1913, was listed for its “architectural quality”.

English Heritage describes it as “an exceptionally handsome Edwardian corner bank, of refined neoclassical design with excellent original metalwork”.

Under the plans, the ground floor of the extended building would be a shop and the three floors above converted into flats.

The façade will be maintained and improved or repaired where needed.

Redbridge Council’s conservation department has welcomed the application to bring it back into use and no objections have yet been received.

Planning officers are considering the application.
