The “Butterfly Guy Rick Mikula” will present a children’s program at 4 p.m. at the Montville Township Public Library, 90 Horseneck Road, Montville. “Backyard Birds” will be the topic at 7 p.m. at the Denville Public Library, located at 121 Diamond Spring Road, Denville. Learn to identify birds by their color, their song and the shape of its head. Amateur naturalists of all ages, 10 and above, will gain knowledge about birds commonly found in back yard, about bird behavior and about birding tips. Christa Wood, a naturalist from the Somerset County Park Commission, will lead the discussion. The program is free and will be presented in the Denville Public Library Theater. A college planning seminar will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Lakeland Hills Family YMCA in Mountain Lakes. It will offer students and their parents a chance to get pertinent college questions answered. Get valuable advice from experts in their field, including: admissions, financial aid, new student programs, and more. The program is free and everyone is welcome. FRIDAY, April 25

A Dover Community Wide Coffee House is planned from 4 to  7 p.m. It  will be a child friendly time with face painting, and arts and crafts.  Big Jeff, a children’s singer will be performing at 6 p.m.   From 7 to 10 p.m., there will be music, coffee, pastries, etc.  This is a free event.  Donations of canned food items will be collected for the First Memorial Presbyterian Church food pantry. The 55 Plus Group of Mountain Lakes meets at 12:45 p.m. at St. Catherine’s Church at the corner of Pocono Road and the Boulevard in Mountain Lakes. All seniors in the area are invited to attend.  The group normally meets the second and fourth Friday of the month. The guest speaker will be Patricia Rusak, Chairman of the Historical Society of Mountain Lakes, who  will give a presentation of life in Mountain Lakes from 1910 – 1930s.  There will be a video of a plane landing on Mountain Lakes, and she will also tell of us the life of the Hapgoods. 

SATURDAY, April 26

Rockaway Township is sponsoring a “Township Parks Clean Up Day” from 9 to 11 a.m.,  and volunteers are needed. All residents, youth groups, scouting groups, families, etc. are welcome to join in removing litter. Children younger than 18 years of age must be under parental supervision. Volunteers will meet at the Rockaway Township Gazebo at Parks Lake and will receive gloves, plastic bags, reusable bags and other promotional items.

Pre-registration is required. Contact the Rockaway Township Division of Health at 973-983-2848 by April 21.

A benefit to support the NJ Conservatory of Mountain Lakes will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Boonton Elks Lodge, 125 Cornelia Ave., Boonton. Admission is $10 and includes  two, tier one prize sheets. Trays and super trays can be viewed beginning at 6:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be sold. A Wildflower Walk at Tourne County Park will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. in Boonton. The fee is $10 per person. The park is located at 41 McCaffrey Lane. Hammond Wildflower Trail at Tourne County Park is home to over 200 varieties of wildflowers which thrive there because of its unique habitat.  Late April is the perfect time to encounter native plants like trout lilies, blue bells, trilliums, violets, blood root, wild azalea, jack in the pulpit and bleeding hearts.  Lee Gaitskill, of the Rockaway Valley Garden Club, which sponsors and maintains the Wildflower Trail,  will conduct the tour. Meet at the Pavilion off of McCaffrey Lane near the ball field.

TUESDAY, April 29

Gail Fishman Gerwin of Morristown, a freelance writer, playwright, and poet, will facilitate her second poetry workshop for members and prospective members of National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), West Morris Section at 1:30 p.m. at Panera at Shoppes at Union Hill, Route 10 West, in Denville. The poetry workshop is free and open to the public. Called “A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That,” the workshop will take participants’ poetry to new levels. Gerwin will introduce several activities that will let participants surprise themselves.   NCJW is a grassroots organization of volunteers and advocates who turn progressive ideals into action. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW strives for social justice by improving the quality of life for women, children, and families and by safeguarding individual rights and freedoms. “Historical Highlights of New Jersey’s Counties” will be the focus at 7 p.m. at the Montville Library. Join staff for this program celebrating the 350th Birthday of New Jersey as local historian Phil Jaeger shares the historical highlights of New Jersey’s 21 counties. The program will focus on significant and interesting facts of each of the counties that make up our great State.  Learn about deserted villages, a castle, the country’s oldest seaside hotel, lighthouses, canals, railroads, America’s first coast to coast highway, the “Trial of the Century”  and more.   Jaeger, a retired educator, is a trustee of the Cedar Grove Historical Society and has served on the Board of the Canal Society of New Jersey. Coming Home Rescue, based in Rockaway, will host a fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m. at The Mission at Rockaway, 66 Beach Street, Rockaway. Doors open at 6 p.m., when trays can be viewed. Calling begins at 8 p.m.  Admission is $20 and includes one sheet of 25 tickets (no one under the age of 18 will be admitted). Seating is limited to the first 150 guests and only tables of 10 guests can be reserved ahead of time with guaranteed payment. More than 125 trays will be displayed, including gift  certificates from restaurants, two Kindles, jewelry, DVDs, Tiffany items, CDs, electronics, appliances, games, housewares and many more items. In addition to the regular trays, there will also be specials including golf packages, an evening at Broadway Comedy Club in New York, Coach bag and accessories and a Kuerig Brewing System.  The Super Specials will feature an iPad Air, three night stay in Reno, Nevada, a membership to the YMCA (valued at $975.00) and a flat screen TV. “Get the Most Out of Your iPad” is the topic at 10 a.m. at the Montville Library. Becky Richardson  of “Technorize”  will present an  iPad  class to the public. Are you getting  the most out of your iPad ?  This class will cover the basics – from how to navigate an  iPad to how you can move or delete an “app”.  Learn how to surf the internet, play music and movies, and how to boot up the app store so your can start downloading apps. This class is for iPad owners only. Registration is required.  Each registrant must bring their iPad to class. Class size is limited. “The Dutch Settlement in Pequannock Twp”  will be the topic of the Historical Society of Rockaway Township at 7 p.m. at the Main Branch of Rockaway Township Public Library, 61 Mount Hope Road. The guest speaker will be  noted local historian Kathy Fisher. The program covers Dutch settlement and influence in the area which was all part of Pequannock Twp. Highlights include the culture in food ways, architecture, home life, religion, law, taking care of poor, acceptance, language and naming traditions. Also, insight to remnants of the past that can still be  seen today will be highlighted. The program is open to the public and is free of charge.

The Randy Lundbland Memorial Golf Outing to benefit the Rock-Den Renegades Youth Lacrosse Program will take place at the Knoll West Country Club in Parsippany. A low cost male cancer screening for Rockaway Township residents will be offered from 4:45 to 6 p.m. at the Rockaway Township Health Center, located at 419 Green Pond Road, Rockaway. The screening includes examinations for prostate, testicular and colorectal cancer. Prostate Cancer is the most common type of cancer found in American men other than skin cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 230,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States in 2014.  The Male Cancer Screening is intended for male residents of Rockaway Township age 50 or older, men over the age of 40 with a family history of prostate cancer, and African American men over the age of 40. The fee for this comprehensive screening, which includes digital rectal exam, prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood test, urinalysis, hemoccult test and health education counseling, is $15. SATURDAY, May 17

Denville Township and Saint Clare’s Health System are sponsoring the Annual Spring Rockaway River Cleanup from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Volunteers are being sought, including civic groups and organizations, to remove litter and debris from the Rockaway River, as this is a flood mitigation activity. No experience is necessary.  Event day registration, check-in and site assignments for the cleanup will begin at 9 a.m.  at the lower parking lot near the emergency room entrance at Saint Clare’s Hospital, located at 25 Pocono Road in Denville.  Although the event is scheduled until 3 p.m., volunteers are welcome to help out for two hours, a half-day or for the entire day.  Refreshments, bags, and requisite supplies will be provided.

Vendors are sought for the  Denville Historical Society’s spring yard sale. The yard sale will offer antiques, collectibles, crafts and more. The sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. SUNDAY, June 22

The third annual “Pedal For Preservation” bike ride will take place at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 22, at West Morris Central High School, 259 Bartley Road, Chester. Riders can discover the Columbia Trail, view untouched wildlife habitats and raise money for The Land Conservancy of New Jersey, which is based in Boonton. The organization is seeking riders, sponsors, and volunteers. Riders will start and finish at West Morris Central High School. Families, recreational and avid cyclers can enjoy a 7, 14, or 28 mile rail trail ride through small towns in rural Morris and Hunterdon counties. WEDNESDAY, Aug. 6

A music concert featuring “Rave On” will take place at 7 p.m. in the gazebo at the Rockaway Borough Public Library. The board of the Rockaway Borough Public Library will host the free event. The concert serves as a celebration for the end of the library’s summer reading program and will feature a performance by the three-piece band “Rave On,” a Buddy Holly Tribute band, playing music of Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and other 50s classics. All are invited to attend.
