Now that Q2 is officially underway, SuperyachtNews.com spoke with commercial manager at OCEAN Independence, Toby Maclaurin for his thoughts on the 2014 market thus far. “I think we’re seeing a more positive start than in the past, although finding the product is proving tricky”, he said. “We’re in a bit of a catch-22 where last year was good in terms of sales, but not because there were more buyers in the market, it was a higher number of sellers who were forced into accepting a new reality of pricing”.
As Maclaurin continues, “what we’re left with is a bit of a stalemate as buyers become more educated; they realise that sellers may be demanding too much for a yacht in the 2014 market, and as such, will wait to dive into the market”. This cat and mouse effect happens as appropriately priced yachts sell, “and the over-priced ones sit on the market incurring reduction after reduction, until they hit the right price and buyers return” Maclaurin explains. As seen with the recent sale of Mar, “she was on for a few years with another company, then we brought her back with a new price and pricing story that delivered the right message to the right client.” Ultimately, Maclaurin shares, “if you want to achieve a faster sale, listing her more aggressively at the beginning and avoiding multiple price reductions will lead to – hopefully – more interest and, therefore, a happier seller”.
The week running 1 – 7 April saw four sales completed, four new central agencies announced, two price reductions made, and one price increase.
Superyacht Sales
The largest sale this week was from Toby Maclaurin and Daniel Dwyer of OCEAN Independence with 49.9m Mar. Completed by Ortona Navi in 2008, she was listed at €13,500,000 with SSH Maritime introducing the buyer.
