A Dover man was arrested Monday after police said he admitted burglarizing a New Cumberland home in an attempt to steal copper piping.
Jeremiah M. Todd, 34, of the 2000 block of Red Bank Road, has been charged with felony burglary and criminal trespassing along with misdemeanor attempted theft. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bail in Cumberland County Prison.
Police were called around 9:55 a.m. March 18 to a residence in the 200 block of Ninth Street in New Cumberland, according to charging documents filed by borough police Officer Caroline Weber.
A man met with police and told them he was tasked with cleaning out the home, which was listed for sale. While he was outside with a co-worker, the men said they heard a loud banging coming from inside the home.
When they went into the basement, they saw copper piping dismantled on the floor. They also saw a man, later identified as Todd, who used a crawl space to escape and drove away in a purple minivan.
One of the workers followed the van into Harrisburg and managed to obtain its license plate number. It was registered to Todd’s mother, who told police that her son had access to the plate — which was from an old vehicle — and owned a purple minivan.
Todd met with police on Monday and admitted in an interview he was the one who was found inside the residence by the two workers, according to police.
He has a preliminary court hearing scheduled for April 2.
