An oceanview San Clemente home once owned by Carl Karcher, founder of the Carl’s Jr. hamburger chain, is on the market for $5.49 million.

The five-bedroom, 7,521-square-foot house is on a third of an acre in guard-gated Cyprus Shore.

The Karchers bought the home in 1976 and expanded it after picking up an adjacent parcel in 1982.

Though the Karchers’ main home was in Anaheim, Carl Karcher spent more time at the San Clemente house in his later years, said listing agent Scott Kidd of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices California Properties, who lives in the neighborhood.

The Karchers were friendly, Kidd said. They even brought hamburgers to the guards at the gate.

Carl Karcher died in 2008. The home was later sold and underwent an extensive interior and exterior remodel, turning its Spanish style to a contemporary Mediterranean look.

The split-level house, at 4006 Calle Louisa, boasts a large family room and game room with a professional poker table and bar.

Outdoor features include a pool house, spa and built-in barbecue.

There’s enough space to put in a swimming pool, but the neighborhood pool, along with a clubhouse and tennis courts, is just across the street.

The home, on a corner lot, also is a quick stroll to steps leading to the community’s private beach.

Kidd said the owner, an entrepreneur who lives in nearby Cotton Point Estates, had planned to downsize and move into the home but decided to sell it instead.
