Norwich’s Golden Triangle has once again been named among the best places to live in the country.
Five reasons why the Golden Triangle is a great place to live:
Good pubs. The Unthank Arms, The York Tavern, The Eaton Cottage, The Rose Tavern, to name but a few of the area’s prized watering holes.
Local food shops. Butchers, bakers (including an artisan bakery called Dozen), and fruit and vegetable shops.
An interesting mix of cafes and restaurants, including The Earlham Arms gastro pub and The Last Brasserie.
A good range of outdoor spaces. Heigham Park’s grass tennis courts are a joy to play on, while there are pockets of small play areas such as the Jenny Lind and Eagle Walk play areas. And, depending on your definition of the exact area that comprises the Golden Triangle, there’s the nearby Eaton Park with all of its amenities.
Many good schools, including Recreation Road Infant School, which was judged to be outstanding at its last inspection.
Eleven East Anglian towns have been named in the top 101 Best Places to Live in Britain – and the Golden Triangle area, which centres around the bustling Unthank Road shops, is one of two places in Norfolk to make it onto the list.
The other is Blakeney in north Norfolk, which is a new addition.
The accolade comes in part one of the Sunday Times’ annual Best Places To Live supplement, which is published on Sunday, March 16.
The guide combines data and statistics such as crime rates, house prices and school performance with the local knowledge and expertise of writers.
Interior designer Paula Gundry, who has a shop in Unthank Road, said: “It has a bit of a buzz about it, in terms of the type of shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs in the area.
“I think it also has such a good mix of property types, so there’s a very mixed demographic.
“You get everything from academics, students and lawyers to surgeons, so it’s a bit of a melting pot and that makes places interesting.
“I live on Unthank Road as well as working here, so I get to see both sides of it.
“It’s a safe environment too and is surrounded by some really good schools.”
Teacher Henri Harben, who lives in Newmarket Street, said the area combines the best parts about living in a village, with the most attractive aspects of city life.
She said: “There’s a real sense of community and some lovely local shops and pubs.
“There’s a happiness about the place. People are always willing to say good morning and it feels very safe.”
Nick De’Ath, landlord of The Unthank Arms pub in Newmarket Street, said: “We have been at the Unthank for 25 years and it was a cool place to live 25 years ago and I think it just gets better and better.”

@June – it’s not the most aesthetically pleasing part of Norwich, but it’s the vibe that makes the GT what it is. It can’t be captured in a photograph.

As someone who moved to Norwich by choice and love it as i do,I have never understood what is so special about rhe Golden Triangle. The house prices seem extremely expensive, ridiculously so for Norfolk, There are much nicer parts of Norwich. The street pictured doesent look any better than the part of Norwich i live in myself. Is it because so many from the University live there do you think, because it would come way down my list of the best place to live in Norwich and i have friends who live in many different parts,just as good sometimes better.

The house prices seem extremely expensive, ridiculously so for Norfolk, There are much nicer parts of Norwich. The street pictured doesent look any better than the part of Norwich i live in myself. Is it because so many from the University live there do you think, because it would come way down my list of the best place to live in Norwich and i have friends who live in many different parts,just as good sometimes better.

That picture of Avenue Road looks awful …. wheelie bins everywhere … cars parked on the pavement .. …. I’ve seen better looking streets in Burnley and Hartlepool!

The best place to live in Norwich is St. James Meadow, on the river, great views, no traffic, a stone’s throw from all the city’s amenities. Much better than the over-hyped and over-priced ‘Golden Triangle’.

Aaaaw – I spent the happiest years of my life in the Golden Triangle, Porterfield Road especially. Lovely place- friendly, loads of facilities and the best pubs ever. This was in the 90s so I don’t know what it’s like now.
