Sunday’s running NFL Scouting Combine post: workout day for Logan Thomas

The Hokies are finally getting their turn to show off their stuff at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

The quarterbacks work out today, meaning Logan Thomas will get to throw and do other drills in front of NFL scouts. I’ll keep tabs of what’s going on from afar and try to update things here with any pertinent info, so check back throughout the day.

If you’re really bored on a lovely Sunday afternoon, you can watch the combine live on the NFL Network or online here. The events have started, although Thomas (QB17) appears to be in the second group of quarterbacks working out.

The defensive backs — Antone Exum and Kyle Fuller — begin the interview process today, which means they might get a gem of a question like defensive end James Gayle did yesterday:

Gayle measured in at 6-foot-4, 259 pounds yesterday, by the way. He says teams have talked to him about being a 4-3 rush end or a 3-4 outside linebacker.

UPDATE, 11:57 a.m.: Thomas ran the 40, clocking unofficial times of 4.60 seconds and 4.57 seconds. That’s second fastest to Texas AM’s Johnny Manziel at 4.56 seconds.

Manziel is 5-foot-11, 207 pounds. Thomas is 6-foot-6, 248 pounds.

Here’s what the NFL Network’s Mike Mayock said: “That is a big, good-looking, fast kid.”

UPDATE, 12:22 p.m.: Looks like the defensive backs have measured in. Antone Exum‘s listed as 6 feet, 213 pounds. That’s seven pounds lighter than what he’s listed as on his Virginia Tech bio.

Kyle Fuller came in at 6 feet, 190 pounds.

UPDATE, 12:30 p.m.: The DBs are going through the interview process right now. Sounds like Exum and Fuller have a friendly bet going.

Exum sounds like he’s good physically.

UPDATE, 12:36 p.m.: Exum doesn’t appear to be holding back his brashness.

UPDATE, 1:07 p.m.: Here’s a short story by the Washington Post on Gayle as he prepares for combine workouts. He talks about wanting to show his adaptability.

UPDATE, 1:33 p.m.: The NFL Network’s Rich Eisen just went through the official 40 times of the QBs on the air. Thomas came in the fastest of the QBs. Here are the top five:

  • 4.61 — Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech
  • 4.63 — Stephen Morris, Miami
  • 4.66 — Connor Shaw, South Carolina
  • 4.68 — Johnny Manziel, Texas AM
  • 4.69 — Derek Carr, Fresno State

UPDATE, 2:00 p.m.: Some more QB numbers are in, and Thomas tops the list again.

He had the best vertical jump at 35.5 inches and the best broad jump at 118 inches. Here are the top five for each:

High Jump

  • 35.5″ — Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech
  • 34.5″ — Derek Carr, Fresno State
  • 34.0″ — Connor Shaw, South Carolina
  • 32.5″ — Blake Bortles, Central Florida
  • 31.5″ — Johnny Manziel, Texas AM

Broad jump

  • 118″ — Logan Thomas, Virginia Tech
  • 116″ — Connor Shaw, South Carolina
  • 115″ — Blake Bortles, Central Florida
  • 113″ — Johnny Manziel, Texas AM
  • 113″ — Teddy Bridgewater, Louisville

UPDATE, 2:21 p.m.: The NFL Network folks turned their conversation toward Thomas near the end of his workout.

Draft analyst Mike Mayock said Thomas’ footwork was “lazy” but noted that the ball still comes out “beautifully,” part of the reason there are so many mixed reviews about him.

“Who’s going to want to rebuild this guy?” said Mayock, projecting him as a fifth- to sixth-round pick. “Somebody is going to believe they can rebuild him.”

NFL Network analyst and former 49ers and Lions coach Steve Mariucci made the same points. but gave an optimistic outlook regarding Thomas’ potential, calling him a mid-round pick for a team that has an established quarterback, a squad that that can develop him and bring him along slowly.

Mayock summed up their thoughts with as apt of a quote about Thomas as I think I’ve heard: “If you can figure out Logan Thomas, he’s got starting quarterback credentials.”

UPDATE, 2:31 p.m.: The 40 will be a big event for Fuller on Tuesday. He has a goal in mind, spurred on by a brotherly rivalry. Considering Corey Fuller was a track guy, I’m not sure how realistic this is, though.

UPDATE, 5:07 p.m.: The defensive linemen did the bench press portion of workout Sunday. Gayle had 26 reps of 225, which was tied for 17th.

The leader of the group, Boston College’s Kaleb Ramsey, did 36 reps.

UPDATE, 5:15 p.m.: A couple more top-five finishes for Thomas in Sunday’s workouts: the 3-cone drill and the 20-yard shuttle.
