Dwight Howard lists Longwood home for sale

Two years after Dwight Howard left the Orlando Magic to play for the Los Angeles Lakers, he has listed his former home in Seminole County on the market for $4.9 million — about $3 million less than he paid in 2008.

Howard, who was spurned by fans and nicknamed “Dwightmare” after leaving the Magic in 2012, now plays for the Houston Rockets.

His five-bedroom Orlando-area home is located off Markham Woods Road in a gated enclave of four or five estate homes, one of which is owned by professional golfer Chris DiMarco. With the listing of Howard’s house, three of the houses on Rice Lake Loop are on the market, said real estate agent Wayne Weger, who has Howard’s listing.

The Gothic-inspired home of the eight-time NBA All Star includes all of its “unique” designer furnishings, according to the listing.

“The home is so spectacular,” Weger said Tuesday. The house was listed for sale Monday, and Weger said he has a “promising” showing to a client on Sunday.

Howard purchased the five-bedroom house in 2008 after it won a series of design awards. With more than 11,000 square feet of living area, the house has a home theater, three-car garage, an office with a private entrance, an exercise room, a game room and a temperature-controlled wine-tasting room. The 4-acre, waterfront property has a pool area with a lazy river, seating areas, waterfall, fire pit and summer kitchen.

Built for the 2008 Street of Dreams luxury-home tour in Seminole County, the house was the most impressive of the more than 350 Street of Dreams houses that have been showcased in cities across the country during the past 27 years, said David Straughan, president of Street of Dreams. The team that worked on the house back in 2008 included Hillcrest Homes and Development, MJS Inc., and CEC Interiors.

“All the finishes are in proportion. They may have been big, but they made sense,” Straughan said. “The interior designer did furnishings that were in scale with the room. Every time you turned around, there was another special and neat feature that was usable.”

The home’s den features bookcases that stretch 15 feet high; hidden behind one of them is a door that leads to the master-bedroom closet, which includes a washer-dryer station. French doors guide you through to the master-bath suite, complete with fireplace and computer-controlled shower. The master suite includes its own patio and a private pool with 10-foot waterfall.

The family room has hand-made ceiling beams, a stone archway and matching fireplace. A foyer is framed by a polished marble staircase, and an exercise room sits at the end of the marble hallway. The home-theater room, made of hand-crafted wood, has its own bar and beverage center.

And facing a second-floor landing, three nouveau-sculpture figures appear to be playing with a ball.
