A Castleford man who has dedicated his life to supporting people with autism has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

Geoff Evans, who has worked with those with the disability for more than 30 years, has been nominated in the lifetime achievement category in the National Autistic Society’s (NAS) Autism Professional Awards.

Mr Evans has worked as a social worker as well as giving lectures autism and is nowhead of quality improvement for Options Group, which provides specialist services for people with autism.

Mr Evans, said: “I am honoured to have been shortlisted for this award, which would not have been possible without the support of the colleagues, parent groups and people with autism I have had the privilege of knowing over the last 30 years.

“I’m thrilled to be part of an event which highlights the work being undertaken and the needs of individuals with autism and their families.”

Mr Evans was nominated for the award by Russell Lease, head of adult services at Options Group, who has worked with him for seven years.

He said: “Geoff has made a difference to the lives of countless individuals over the last 30 years, by providing direct support, delivering free training and shaping the development of services.

“He is a quiet, selfless and humble man who would not normally seek out recognition, which is why we made the nomination on his behalf.”

The awards ceremony will take place at the NAS Professional Conference in Harrogate on Tuesday, March 4.
