SAGINAW, MI — The second in a series of free, public events is taking place today at Saginaw’s Hoyt Park.
A “school spirit skate” will take place from noon until 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, complete with skating lessons.
Dr. Colleen Linehan, a surgeon with Covenant Healthcare and a former captain of the Harvard women’s hockey team, is ready to teach inexperienced skaters the ways of the ice from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m.
The warming house at the park, located at Ezra Rust and South Washington, is open for the entirety of the event, with $2 skate rentals available, along with free hot cocoa and cookies.
Students from the area are encouraged to attend the event while wearing clothing representing their schools.
The first Friends of Hoyt Park event, held Saturday, Jan. 18 brought out as many as 1,000 people, according to organizers.
Below is a schedule of future events planned for the park.
- Saturday, Feb. 1 — Super Bowl skate; wear your favorite team apparel (noon to 4 p.m.)
- Sunday, Feb. 2 — Skate with Saginaw Spirit players from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. (1:20 to 3:30 p.m.)
- Saturday, Feb. 8 — Family skate; see who can bring the largest family group (noon to 4 p.m.)
- Saturday, Feb. 15 — Ice Blast events, including first-ever Saginaw outhouse races (noon to 4 p.m.)
While the hours listed above are the only times the warming house is open, the public is welcome to skate or sled any time during the winter season.
Skaters are asked to avoid the ice if it begins to melt.
