WITH a new management team taking over the running of Weston’s Bristol House pub, customers are beginning the process of getting the building listed by English Heritage.
Mark Thyer, a member of the Save The Bristol House Campaign, has worked hard to keep the Milton Road building open after owner Enterprise Inns decided to submit a planning application to extend it by one storey.
Councillors viewed this as an attempt to make the extented building a more attractive proposition for would-be buyer Tesco, and dismissed the appeal.
But customers continued to battle with the company after it appealed the decision and closed down the pub once this appeal was lost.
Mr Thyer said: “We are putting it to English Heritage that it is not the age of the building, it is its architecture. It is a curved building, all done in a mock Tudor effect.
“It is a good old traditional pub and is what England is all about.”
The pub was listed as a community asset by North Somerset Council last year, which will not only signify the building as a place of importance within the area but will also impose a set of rules which owners Enterprise will have to adhere to if it tries to make any changes to the site.
Mr Thyer has now submitted an application to English Heritage, which if successful will mark Bristol House pub as a place of architectural importance.

How can a buiding that is only approx. 70 years old be considered as a ‘Listed’ building ? – There are house in the Devonshire Road Milton road area that are of a similar design and age !! The building is only a ‘Lookalike’ from the period, but still constructed using 20th century building products.
