The casualty list included the girls and boys doubleheader basketball evening at the Sanford Center against Thief River Falls. Tuesday’s games were scheduled for 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and were moved to the Sanford Center because the facility was prepped for today’s visit by the Harlem Globetrotters and the Sanford Center officials were eager to showcase the venue to area high school fans.
Also scrubbed on Tuesday were the girls home hockey game with Moorhead, the boys hockey game at Crookston and the wrestling meet at Grand Rapids.
Bemidji High School activities director Troy Hendricks has rescheduled the boys hockey game for Thursday and the girls basketball contest to Jan. 28 at the high school. He also is in the process of finding suitable reschedule dates for the other events.
The list of postponed or cancelled events continues to grow while the number of available open dates shrinks. Since last Thursday the Lumberjacks winter sports programs have lost 13 events to the dangerously cold conditions.
The forecast for the rest of the week is more favorable for travel and the Jacks should be able to complete this week’s schedule without further incident.
Today is an open day for BHS events but on Thursday the girls basketball team resumes its schedule at home against Duluth East. The Lumberjacks are 3-6 and currently sit seventh in the eight-team Section 8-4A standings with a QRF rating 64.0.
St. Michael-Albertville leads the section with a 155.4 QRF and St. Cloud Tech is second at 145.9. Also listed ahead of the Lumberjacks are Elk River (139.6), Buffalo (111.2), Rogers (101.4) and Moorhead (82.2). Trailing the Jacks is Brainerd (35.8).
In the Section 8-4A boys rankings Bemidji is eighth at 31.2. Leading the pack is Elk River (190.3) while St. Cloud Tech is second (152.0) and Buffalo third (128.9).
St. Michael-Albertville (96.2) is a distant fourth and is just ahead of Moorhead (95.3). Trailing the leaders are Brainerd (85.9), Rogers (77.6) and Bemidji.
Determining seeding for the 8-3A wrestling meet later this winter will be difficult as there is no uniform schedule and judging strengths and weaknesses through head-to-head results will be sketchy.
BHS has met only one section opponent so far, losing 33-32 to Sartell last weekend in Buffalo. Overall the Jacks are 6-4. Other section teams that own better than .500 overall records are Alexandria (4-0), Little Falls (7-2), St. Cloud Tech (6-2), Sartell (5-4) and Moorhead (3-2).
The boys hockey team currently is third in the Section 8-2A standings with a QRF of 58.6. Roseau sits on top at 73.5 while Brainerd has a 66.6 QRF.
Just below BHS are Buffalo (56.8), St. Cloud Tech (54.6), Moorhead (54.6) and Monticello (53.6). River Lakes (37.9) and Becker (33.8) trail the pack.
In the Mariucci Conference standings the Jacks (6-6 overall) are sixth with a 1-3 league record. East Grand Forks (10-2-1, 2-0-1 Mariucci) is first and Thief River Falls (8-5, 2-1) is second. Behind the Prowlers are Warroad (11-2-1, 1-1-1), Roseau (9-3, 1-1), Moorhead (5-7, 1-1), Bemidji (6-6, 1-3) and Crookston (4-7-2, 0-1).
Thief River Falls leads the Greater Minnesota girls hockey conference with a 7-0 record. Overall the Prowlers are 17-0. East Grand Forks is right on their heels, however, with a 15-1 overall mark and a 5-1 league record.
Trailing the leaders are Warroad (9-7-1, 2-2-1), Roseau (8-9, 4-3), Moorhead (3-9-1, 1-3), Bemidji (4-7-2, 1-5-1), Crookston (5-9-1, 1-6) and Detroit Lakes (3-6-2, 0-2).
In the Section 8-2A standings the Lumberjacks are seventh in the nine-team field with a 49.2 QRF. St. Cloud (12-1-1) leads the pack at 75.8 and Buffalo (8-8-1) is second at 63.5.
Sartell (10-3-2) is third at 62.0 and following the Sabres are North Wright County (6-7-1, 55.7), River Lakes (9-5, 54.2), Roseau (8-9, 53.3), Bemidji, Moorhead (3-9-1, 31.6) and Brainerd (1-13, 21.3).
