South Brisbane residents are pushing for the creation of an “Edmonstone Street precinct” in order to promote and protect the road’s history.

Edmondstone Street was lionised by famous Australian writer David Malouf as a high point of Brisbane’s turn of the century architecture in his 1985 memoir, 12 Edmondstone Street.

Residents say the buildings along the street, once one of the city’s “most fashionable”, tell the story of how Brisbane has grown.

One of Brisbane’s most respected conservation architects, Peter Marquis-Kyle, who served on the Queensland Heritage Council, has backed the idea.

‘‘In the conservation lingo, Edmondstone Street is a representative example,’’ he said.

‘‘It is a typical Brisbane story about a single Brisbane street having different classes of houses.

‘‘You have the…[posh residents] living on the top of the hill and the riff-raff  living at the bottom and the ‘in-betweens’ living in between them.’’

‘‘You can stand in the street and just by by looking at the houses see the evidence of the grander houses on the prime sites at the top of the hill.

‘‘But you can no longer see the evidence of the ordinary houses that have disappeared under the tarmac of the Melbourne Hotel.”

Fairfax Media understands the Greek Community has had preliminary talks with Brisbane City Council about moving a heritage-listed home from nearby Browning Street onto the site left by the heritage-listed Belevedere building, which was destroyed in a suspicious fire in November.

Tony Philbrick, Brisbane’s former town clerk who restored 19 Edmondstone Street after it became a ‘‘tumble down’’ wreck, suggested the idea to other residents.

A resident – who asked not to be named – confirmed Mr Philbrick had contacted several residents, who were now behind the idea.

‘‘We’re looking at putting in a submission to the council to have this declared a ‘precinct walk’ because it was one of the most fashionable streets in Brisbane,’’ the resident said.

‘‘It has a whole range of architectural styles included along this street and we believe this should be recognised in some way.”
