A landmark city church has been put up for sale.

The Elim Pentecostal Church on Lancaster Road North is being marketed by Petty Chartered Surveyors.

The Grade II listed building is on the market at £350,000, and local councillors said they were keen to see the building bought.

Town centre councillor Drew Gale said: “I hope somebody does take it up – it could be converted into any number of venues.

“I would encourage people to have a look at it.”

He said he hoped the prominent church sold, and didn’t lie unused.

He said: “I think it’s a tragedy when any building sits empty, and I just hope somebody with a bit of imagination can make use of it because we don’t want empty buildings.”

Coun Gale said he thought the church building could attract a night time venue or flats.

He said: “We are trying to encourage that sort of cosmopolitan city living feel.”

He added: “It is going to take an entrepreneur with a bit of vision.”

The church is marketed as having extensive accommodation over two floors, and suitable for different uses such as office, leisure and retail, subject to planning consent.

The building has many original features, including stained glass windows.

The ground floor includes an open plan area of worship, as well as rooms used as offices, toilets and a kitchen.

The first floor is open plan, and includes shower facilities.
