JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)- Keeping your home warm could drain your wallet.As the temperature starts to drop over the next few days, there are several ways to keep the heat inside your home without breaking the bank.

“We’ve got your basic pipe insulation; this will help with winds hitting your pipes and stuff like that,” said Dane Boggs, assistant manager at Lowe’s in Jonesboro. “We’ve got your faucet sock. The faucet socks can help protect the wind.”

Boggs advises people to start now preparing their homes for this cold weather.

“You want to make sure you are covering or filling any types of cracks in your foundation to help prevent your pipes from getting any air to them,” he said.

And don’t forget about your windows.

“We’ve got window insulation kits as well and that’s going to help protect the wind from coming through your windows,” Boggs said.

Boggs said the most important thing to remember is to keep your home heated at all times. Lowe’s also offers a tool that helps heat your pipes if they freeze over.

“We’ve got a heat electrical tape that you can put on there and it helps heat up your pipes simply plug it in to a plug in and it actually heats up your pipes for you,” he said. 

It’s also important to keep water moving through your faucets.

“Make sure you are keeping your faucet dripping that way you can keep your water flowing through your pipes and keep it from busting as well,” Boggs said. “You also want to make sure that every night you are leaving your cabinets open or something of that nature so your pipes wont freeze.”

Be sure to close off any rooms that are not in use, close outside vents to your house and reverse the direction of your ceiling fan.
