DEVELOPERS have revealed plans to turn a nursing home into flats.

The proposals would see 16 apartments created through the conversion of the Grade II-listed Leeds Road building which currently houses the Brooklands care home in Selby.

Selby District Council is expected to make a decision about the scheme at the start of February.

The nursing home, which was originally a house and once part of Selby College as well as being a North Yorkshire County Council youth office, would close if the plans are approved.

Documents sent to council planners claim it no longer meets quality standards for nursing care and has become “unviable”.

The flats would be a mix of one and two-bedroom properties under the proposals submitted by St Philip’s Care Group Ltd. Some changes would be made to the front of the building, which dates from the mid-19th century and has since been extended, but its appearance would largely remain unaltered.

In a planning statement, the applicants said the site had been used as a nursing home since the late 1980s, with the original part of the building now being unoccupied, but the nursing home still caring for “a limited number of patients”.

The statement said: “The proposal will allow the maintenance of a listed building which is also important as part of the character of the conservation area.

“The internal layout will not harm the historic character of the building which has been significantly altered by the previous uses as an educational institution and a nursing home. It will ensure the upkeep of the building, which is currently showing some signs of deterioration.”

The statement said a new and alternative use for the site now had to be found if it was to be maintained, and turning it into flats would achieve this, while its new residents would have good access to local shops and facilities.

It also said the building already had good disabled access and car-parking because of its use as a nursing home.
