Upcoming area Veterans Day events listed

SOUTHERN INDIANA —
SATURDAY

JEFFERSONVILLE

• A Veterans Day program honoring all veterans of Clark County will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at First Christian Church of  Jeffersonville  3209 Middle Road.

The featured speaker will be Brigadier General Wayne Black, the first black Brigadier General in the Indiana National Guard. After serving for 30 years, Black was promoted this past Saturday at a ceremony at the Indiana War Memorial. Black will help to lead Indiana’s National Guard of almost 14,000 service members.

Col. Black joined the Indiana National Guard in 1996. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 as the commander of a training, mentorship and oversight team to the Afghan National Police and the Border Police.

The event is free and open to the public and several public officials are expected to be in attendance.

UTICA

• Utica Hillcrest Cemetery will sponsor a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the cemetery. The American Legion Color Guard Unit will be in attendance.

SUNDAY

JEFFERSONVILLE

• Jeffersonville will host a Veterans Day event at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at the war memorial located at the corner of Riverside Drive and Clark Street in Jeffersonville. Several local officials including Mayor Mike Moore are expected to attend.

CLARKSVILLE

• The Clarksville Historical Society will hold a Veterans Day service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at the War Memorial behind the Clarksville Town Hall, 2000 Broadway.

The speaker  will be Terry Cummins, a U.S. Navy veteran, noted author and News and Tribune columnist. The Honor Guard from Sellersburg American Legion Post will participate. In case of bad weather, the service will be in the Town Hall.

NEW ALBANY

• The city of New Albany and bicentennial commission will honor veterans Sunday, Nov. 10, at Bicentennial Park with a program titled “Veterans Day Salute to all Military Past and Present.”

Veterans and others will begin gathering at 11:30 a.m. at the park, which is at the corner of Spring and Pearl streets, and at 12:45 p.m. the Legion Riders honor guard will arrive. The official program is from 1 to 2 p.m. and music by Hugh Bir and Friends will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Veterans and various community organizations will have tables set up to provide information to veterans and their families.

MONDAY

NEW ALBANY

• The annual Veterans Day service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at the War Memorial Plaza on Market Street in New Albany. There will be a short service at 10:30 a.m. at VFW Post 3281 and following the service, many veterans will walk to the plaza for the 11 a.m. service.

• The Indiana University Student Veterans Organization will honor veterans with several activities. From 10:45 to 11:15 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, there will be a bell-ringing memorial service in McCullough Plaza. Following the ceremony, enjoy a luncheon in the Hoosier Room from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Reservations are required by today, Nov. 8.

BORDEN

• Invite any veterans that you know to join us at William W. Borden Elementary School on  Monday, November 11th at 1:30 p.m. for a special program honoring

their service to our country. Students will lead most of the program which will include songs, poems, and a certificate will be presented to all veterans in attendance honoring their service for our country. The school will have a small reception following the program in the  lobby where veterans and their families can browse student work and enjoy cookies and punch.
