Across Burlington County, towns are gearing up for Halloween on Thursday with a grab bag of kid-friendly events.
Smiling jack-o’-lanterns and ghostly figures will greet visitors to Palmyra as borough residents decorate their homes.
Prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated houses, all in preparation for the joint Palmyra-Riverton Halloween parade scheduled for Wednesday on Broad Street. Retired teacher Donna Wenzke will serve as parade marshal.
Police cars from both municipalities will lead the parade, which starts at 7 p.m. at Broad and Main streets in Riverton and heads south on Broad Street to Legion Field in Palmyra. Costumed children, fire and rescue trucks and school groups will join in the procession.
On Halloween, Medford and Eastampton are planning “trunk or treat” events, in which parents park their vehicles in lots and hand out candy from their trunks.
The Woman’s Club of Medford is looking for a few good “trunkers” to join in from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Village of Taunton Forge Shopping Center.
In Eastampton, the Recreation Department is sponsoring a similar event from 6 to 8 p.m. on the green at the Manor House at 12 Manor House Court. Cars will start lining up at 5 to be ready for trick-or-treaters. Prizes will be awarded for the best-decorated trunks.
Also known as Halloween tailgating, trunk-or-treating is a new, safe form of candy collecting for youngsters living in rural and suburban communities where houses may be spread apart and going door-to-door is unrealistic, the Woman’s Club noted in announcing the event.
“From the research we’ve done, this is great for the kids, but the parents end up having just as much fun,” said Kathy Cullen, president of the Woman’s Club of Medford.
Parents who wish to participate in candy distribution should come in a vehicle and be prepared to distribute candy from their trunk. Decorations are optional, but prizes will be given for the best-decorated child and trunk at the Medford event.
Children who are escorted can walk through a designated area of the parking lot to collect candy. Members of the Woman’s Club will also escort them around the shopping center to collect treats from the stores.
The stores will also have snacks and other munchies available.
The Taunton Forge center is at Taunton Boulevard and Tuckerton Road. For more information and to register, visit www.medfordwomansclub.com or email medfordwomansclub@gmail.com.
As Halloween approaches, parents, homeowners and motorists are being reminded to be aware of both the treat-filled and tricky parts of the holiday.
Insurance agents urge motorists to be especially careful on the roadways when youngsters are out after dark.
Homeowners are also advised to be careful with the use of candles in jack-o’-lanterns and to keep outdoor lights on — both to ensure the safety of costumed trick-or-treaters and to keep mischief makers away.
