Grade II-listed Burwall’s sold off £4m guide price

A historic grade II-listed site near the Clifton Suspension Bridge has been sold by the University of Bristol off a guide price of £4m.

Burwall’s House was acquired by Bath-based developer the Kersfield Group, which is currently in discussions with North Somerset Council about turning the 4.9-acre site into an upmarket residential scheme featuring both apartments and houses.

The transaction includes the main house, a separate annexe, a lodge and landscaped grounds situated in the Leigh Woods Conservation Area.

Burwall’s was marketed by property consultancies Jones Lang LaSalle and Savills.

Patrick Finch, director of estates at the University of Bristol, said: “Although we no longer have an operational need for Burwalls, we are delighted that the property, which has made an important contribution to the history of the university and the city of Bristol, is now in good hands for the future.”

David Newton of the Kersfield Group added: “It is a rare opportunity to be able to acquire such a landmark building that is instantly recognisable and steeped in history.”

Burwall’s House was originally a private house but was taken over by the War Office in 1939. The University of Bristol purchased the building in 1948 to provide accommodation for staff and students.

Most recently, it served as a conference centre and wedding venue.
