Plans to build Britain’s high-speed rail network through South Yorkshire could cost a village a Grade II-listed chimney.

Councillors in Cudworth have highlighted how the free-standing chimney at Bleach Croft farm sits on the proposed route of the HS2 line.

The chimney dates back to 1854 and was listed in 1988.

Coun Charlie Wraith, who represents Cudworth on Barnsley Council, said: “Why should we lose a Grade II-marked building and not get anything back in return?”

Coun Wraith believes an existing disused railway in Cudworth – which used to serve trains travelling as far as Edinburgh – should be used for HS2.

However, the Department for Transport says the old line is not straight enough for very fast trains.
