• Championships in Morocco
NIGERIA and Egypt are the only two African countries that will present boys and girls’ teams for the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF)-sanctioned World Junior Championships holding in Rabat, Morocco.
Nigeria’s qualifications was confirmed to the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) by ITTF as the country’s presence was made possible following the performance of its team at the last African Junior Championship held in Tunisia in March.
The 2013 ITTF World Junior Championships will be organised by the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Tennis de Table (FRMTT) under the auspices and authority of ITTF.
Seven events made up of team, singles and doubles will be competed for at the tournament holding in December 1 to 8 at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.
In the boys’ team event, Africa will be represented by Nigeria, Egypt and Tunisia while China will lead the Asia teams made up of five teams.
Europe will have five teams; Pan America will have four teams, while two teams will represent Oceania in the event.
In the girls’ team event, Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria will hoist Africa’s flag while China will spearhead Asia made of five teams; Europe will also get five slots, Pan America has four teams while Oceania has two teams.
In the singles’ event, over 96 boys and 96 girls may participate with a maximum of four boys and four girls per country with the exception of the host country – Morocco, which is entitled to enter up to six boys and six girls.
In the doubles, over 48 pairs of boys and girls may feature in the championships with a maximum of two boys’ pairs and two girls’ pairs per country with the exception of the host, Morocco, which is entitled to enter up to three boys’ pairs and three girls’ pairs. These 48 pairs will be composed from the players entered for the teams and singles events.
The first stage of the boys’ and girls’ singles will be played in a round robin format in groups of four and three players. Two players are expected to advance from each group to the second stage, while the top 16 seeded players advance directly to the second stage, which will be a knockout draw of 64 players. For the doubles event, all events will be played on a knockout basis.
