Steamboat Briefs: Preregistration is open for Crane Festival events

The second annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival takes place from Sept. 6 to 9 in Steamboat Springs and Hayden. The festival features crane viewing sessions throughout the Yampa Valley, expert speakers, film screenings, family activities, an art show and bird walks.

Most events are free, but a few require preregistration, including:

Sept. 7

■ Shuttle service from Stock Bridge Transit Center to sunrise crane viewing, $5

■ Guided nature walk at the top of Steamboat Ski Area, free

■ Shuttle to Carpenter Ranch picnic and sunset crane viewing, $5; boxed dinner for picnic, $15

Sept. 8

■ Shuttle service from Stock Bridge Transit Center to sunrise crane viewings, $5

■ Plein air painting workshop with Joan Hoffmann, $30

Sept. 9

■ Shuttle service from Stock Bridge Transit Center to sunrise crane viewings, $5

Oak Creek’s Labor Day 5K race is morning of Sept. 2

Oak Creek’s Labor Day 5K is at 10:15 a.m. Sept. 2. The cost is $20, and registration is from 8 to 10 a.m. the morning of the race at Town Hall, 129 Nancy Crawford Blvd. in Oak Creek. Proceeds will benefit the Soroco High School track and field program. For more information, call 970-819-9164.

College students working on GED reminded of exam

Colorado Mountain College is reminding students working toward a GED to complete the existing exam by Dec. 31 before the new computerized test is put into place across the country.

Those who do not pass every section before the end of 2013 will have to start over, according to the release.
