MAJOR plans have been unveiled that will see large-scale renovation work at Burton Town Hall.

East Staffordshire Borough Council has announced that work is due to start to repair and enhance the historic building in the coming weeks.

Stone and brick work will be improved along with windows, rain pipes and the tiled roof.

Liz Staples, deputy leader for corporate services, said: “The council is delighted that we are able to undertake this work in order to ensure that the borough’s heritage is maintained for future generations.”

The town hall is a Grade two listed building of Victorian design.

It was designed by Reginald Churchill and built by Thomas Lowe and Sons in 1881 to be presented as a gift to the town by Michael Thomas Bass.

The original building extended from the clock tower to Rangemore Street, with further additions in 1888 and 1891.

The building was then presented to the town for municipal purposes with formal title passing to the borough in December 1892.

A spokesman for the borough council said: “As part of the council’s rolling capital programme, works are scheduled to repair and enhance the town hall.

“The first phase of this programme, initially to the principal facade, is due to commence in late August through to completion early in the new year. These works will repair and improve the stone and brick work, as well as ensure essential maintenance of the rainwater pipes, windows and tiled roofs.

“The council has been able to meet the costs of these works from resources set aside following the sale of the Midland Grain Warehouse.”
