Coolmore Canford Cliffs Stakes (Listed) 7½f, 2yo

INDIAN MAHARAJA confirmed himself a colt of some potential when remaining unbeaten with the minimum of fuss for Aidan O’Brien.

Ridden by son Joseph, the 30-100 favourite confirmed the promise shown when winning on debut at Gowran Park, tracking the pace then quickening away easily from his rivals to beat Ceisteach by three lengths.

Another step up in class before the end of the season appears likely, as Indian Maharaja holds a clutch of Group entries, including the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes and the Dubai Dewhurst Stakes.

Joseph O’Brien was impressed, as he said: “Indian Maharaja was still a bit green but he’s an exciting horse. He relaxed and when I gave him a flick he quickened up nicely. He will have learnt a lot from tonight’s race.”

Indian Maharaja is a general 16-1 for the 2014 Investec Derby, and as big as 25-1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.
