A series of recreation and sports events this fall will go to helping residents affected by this summer’s bout of heavy rains and damaging floods.
The Thunderbirds Sporting Club will share the profits from six fundraising events with the American Red Cross and the Mohawk Fire Department’s Alexander Hose Company.
Typically fundraisers are done for the Thunderbirds club in order to help offset the costs of the roller hockey players attending championships.
Gelston Castle Estate in Mohawk will host the following events:
*The Roosevelt Races, which will feature a quarter-mile run, one mile run, two mile run, a 5K and a 10K, will be on Sunday, Sept. 8.
*The Duo-Duatholon on Saturday, Sept. 14 will involve two-person teams — a bicyclist and a runner. The run is a 10K course broken into three parts and the bicycle course is a 25K broken into three parts. There will be prizes for the fastest all-male, all-female and co-ed teams.
*King and Queen of the Mountain on Wednesday, Sept. 21 will allow participants to work along or in teams tracking the number of times they travel to the top of the hillside, with a prize to the team who makes the most trips. Participants will obtain sponsor sheets and solicit donations to benefit the Red Cross.
*The Thunder Mudder on Saturday, Sept. 28 will feature a 5K obstacle course with about 10 obstacles. Organizers currently are looking for donations of tires without rims, lumber and other materials. Contact Gelston Castle event coordinator Bill Schmelcher at billschmelcher@yahoo.com, or call 235-9988.
*The Zombie Run for Life on Saturday, Oct. 26 will feature a 5K obstacle with zombies trying to get runners’ flags. Prizes will be based on the fastest time and most flags left, as well as best costumes.
*The Turkey Trot on Sunday, Nov. 24 will feature quarter-mile, one-mile and two-mile options based on age, ability or choice. Participants will be asked to bring nonperishable food items for local pantries for a discount off the set admission price.
To sign up for any of the events, visit ticketfly.com. There will also be information posted on the Gelston Castle Facebook page and on the website, gelstoncastleestate.com.
Currently the Roosevelt Races is the only event listed on the ticket website, and the costs range from $5 to $25.
Organizers are looking for sponsors and volunteers to help set up for each event and clean up afterward.
