Hole in one — times three
A trio of golfers each recorded a hole in one at Bill Roberts Municipal Golf Course recently.
Peggy Chappuis achieved the feat on hole No. 16, using a 9-wood. Witnesses were Barb Creel and Connie Ford.
Susan Court sunk one on No. 3 with an 8-iron. Her shot was witnessed by Joe Naglich and Dan Warwick.
John Rausch also hit his hole in one on No. 16 – witnesses were Dick Franz and Bob Stansberry – while using a 5-iron.
BASKETBALL
Locals win 3-on-3 tourney
Helena’s RufRiders won at the recent Hoopfest 3-on-3 basketball tournament recently, going undefeated in their competitive, 10th-grade bracket. The tournament is touted as the largest 3-on-3 event in the country.
Capital High’s Tanner Amdahl, Helena High’s Regan Shein and Chase Benson and Great Falls CMR’s Andrew Grinde teamed up to score 20 in every game to beat their opponents before the time limit. The group ultimately defeated one from Missoula Hellgate for the team title.
BASEBALL
Helena team nabs 4th
The Helena 9U All-Stars placed fourth at the Firecracker 10U Tournament in Kalispell this past weekend. There were 19 teams in the bracket, with teams representing Canada, Montana, Idaho and Washington.
In pool play, the 9U All-Stars went 3-0, giving up only one run behind the pitching efforts of Jackson Burke, Carson DesRosier, Brayden Koch, Brett Stoos and Gabe Sundelius. Offensively, Hunter Bratcher, DesRosier, Cale Hines and Trysten Mooney had a big
weekend.
During the single-elimination championship bracket play, the 9U All-Stars beat the Mission Valley 10U All-Stars. They then lost two tough but competitive battles and earned a fourth-place finish.
MVP honors, chosen by the opposing coach, were earned in the different games by Mooney, Dillon Brenden, Koch, DesRosier, and Mason Greene. Rounding out the Helena 9U All-Star roster is Eamon Higgins, Sam Maronick and Hunter Redfern.
SWIMMING
HLST team fares well in Missoula
The Helena Lions Swim Team sent seven to the Quad LSC Championship meet in Missoula over the weekend. A qualifying time was needed to attend the meet.
HLST swimmers established new records in four events. Kaitlyn Kleppelid set new records in the 17 over girls 200 free (2:14.54) and the 100 fly (1:08.05). Peter Kotson set new records in the 15-16 boys 50 free (24.86) and the 100 free (53.78).
Peter Kotson placed first in all six of his events in the prelims/finals meet. Placing in the top six in an event were Nick Angeli, Kaitlyn Kleppelid, Avree Klungland, Emma Martin, Kate Murphy and Stephen Murphy.
The Helena Lions Swim Team will host the Capital City meet this weekend. Qualifying swimmers will then attend Senior Sectionals in Gresham, Ore., beginning July 17.
SOCCER
Montana U13 team competes well in Seattle
Soccer players from Helena and the region teamed up to represent Montana in a regional tournament held in Seattle this past weekend.
It was the first time the players had competed together and they represented the state well, earning a pair of ties and suffering one loss.
The Montana Blitzz U13 team pulled out a 2-2 tie with a team from Vancouver, getting goals from Ryan Arpin and Matt Baldridge and assists from Hans Pessl and Ted Scott. Peter Frank made 11 saves in net.
Montana then fell to the Seattle United, 5-0, despite a dozen saves by keeper Dominic Altamura.
Against Puget Sound’s Tynecastle FC, Montana again played to a tie, this time 1-1. Baldridge had the lone goal, off an assist from Ben Taylor, while Frank made eight saves.

Firecracker Junior Outdoor tournament results
The Helena Family YMCA Firecracker Junior Outdoor Volleyball Tournament was held Saturday at Centennial Park.
Twenty four participants competed in six divisions, based on age and skill level. Champions were crowned in each division, along with the following skill and sportsmanship awards:

UPCOMING EVENTS
Motocross
Helena will host a Big Sky Challenge race this weekend, with concessions and camping available.
Practice will take place on Saturday, with tickets costing $20 and a $10 gate fee per person. Races will be on Sunday, with practice starting at 7 a.m.
YMCA 3-on-3 tournament
The Helena Family YMCA is hosting a one day, 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament on Saturday, July 20, in the Y parking lot. The tournament is open to players of all ages and abilities, male and female, youth through adult.
Summer Slam is modeled after tournaments like Spokane’s Hoopfest and Missoula’s Garden City Shootout.
The tournament will include three divisions — youth, high school and adult. The youth division is divided into male and female, with players entering grades 3-8. High school and adult divisions both host male, female and co-ed brackets.
Games are played by ones and twos to 20 or a total of 25 minutes, whichever comes first. All teams are guaranteed a minimum of three games and all participants receive a Summer Slam T-shirt.
Players form their own teams of three to four members and submit a registration form either online at helenaymca.org or in person at the YMCA front desk.
Summer Slam is still accepting registrations, which must be received by Monday, July 15. Youth and high school teams cost $80 and adult teams cost $100.

Triathlon
The XTERRA Wild Horse Creek Triathlon, held in Hyalite Canyon Recreation Area 15 miles south of Bozeman, is set for Sunday, July 28.
This will be the ninth and final running of the race.
The all off-road triathlon is part of a nationwide race series for off-road triathlons and has two distances.
The short course is a 600-yard swim, 7-mile mountain bike and 3-mile run. The longer course is a 1,200-yard swim, 16-mile bike and 6-mile trail run. There is also a long-course relay division for men, women and mixed teams.
Proceeds from the event are donated to charity.
Registration will take place at Montana Ale Works in Bozeman on Friday, July 26 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, July 27 at the race venue from 2-7 p.m. Registration can also be completed online through Active.com until 11 p.m. on July 26.
