The Waunakee Tribune provides this space free of charge each week to nonprofit organizations in the Waunakee area. Items for the Coming Events should be submitted in writing before 10 a.m. Tuesday, unless a holiday causes a schedule change. Articles may be edited for clarity and length. Articles may be published three consecutive weeks prior to the event.


July 11: Legion Post 360 Cookout/Meeting

American Legion Post 360 will hold its monthly meeting in the Legion Clubroom beginning with a cookout. Coals will be ready at 6:15 p.m. followed by the monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Bring your own meat and table service. For more information contact Phil at 849-4699 or kjkpwk@tds.net.

July 11: Wellness workshop on success

The Waunakee-Westport Lions Club and the Waunakee Village Center will present another program in the monthly series, “Workshops on Wellness.” Dr. Chad Updike, Waunakee chiropractor, will present “Preparing for Success: What successful and healthy people do differently.” Dr. Updike will address five main areas often overlooked when it comes to health. Dr. Updike is dedicated to the mission that every man, woman and child live the healthiest life possible. The presentation will be from 7-8 p.m. July 11.

July 12: Girls’ golf clinic

A free golf clinic for girls ages 5 to 13 will be held July 12 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The Meadows of Sixmile Creek.

July 13: Stand for Jon benefit

Stand for Jon, a benefit for Jon Espenes, will be held from noon-6 p.m. July 13 at American Legion Post 360, 417 E. Main St. Brats, hamburgers and hot dogs will be sold, and a silent auction and raffle will be held. On July 28, 2012, Jon was in a serious motorcycle accident that resulted in the loss of his lower left leg. All proceeds from the benefit will go to help Jon and his family defray medical expenses. Donations can also be made to Stand For Jon at UW Credit Union.

July 13: Dance Team car wash

The Waunakee High School Dance Team will have a car wash fundraiser from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, at the Waunakee Fire Station. Please stop by and have your car washed and support the dance team.

July 14: G.K. Chesterton Lecture

Dale Ahlquist, president of the American Chesterton Society, will give a free lecture about G.K. Chesterton. Chesterton authored 100 books and wrote over 10,000 essays as a journalist in the early 20th century. He was also a well-known debater during his lifetime. Please join us for this special event on Sunday, July 14, 2-3 p.m., in the Narthex at St. John the Baptist parish, 209 South St., Waunakee.

July 15: WaunaFest meeting

The WaunaFest meeting is set for 7 p.m. July 15 at Rex’s Innkeeper. All are welcome.

July 18: Community Band concert

The Waunakee Community Band will present their fourth concert of the summer season on Thursday, July 18, at 7 p.m. in the gazebo in the Village Park. The trombone and woodwind section will be featured during the concert as well as many other styles of music to entertain. Waunakee Culver’s will be providing custard treats during the concert. Come and enjoy “Music in the Park.” Bring a blanket or chair to sit. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the High School Performing Arts Center.

July 18: Unit 360 Auxiliary Meeting

The next meeting will be Thursday, July 18 at 7p.m. This is a very important meeting so please plan on attending. Anyone that can help make cookies or bars, for the State Convention reception on Saturday, July 20, please bring them to this meeting. July 18: Class of 1957 reunion

The Waunakee High School Class of 1957 will have its annual reunion on Thursday, July 18th at Rex’s Innkeeper starting at 11:30 a.m.. No reservations required.

July 19: Westport Squares

The Westport Squares next mainstream square dance will be at 7:30 p.m. July 19 at the Westport Town Hall. Mike Seurer will be the caller. For information, visit westportsquares.com.

July 19: Wauna Spike 

Completed entries, with team fees, for the July 27 WaunaSpike tournament must be delivered by July 19. Teams will be required to field 3 men and 3 women for tournament play. Team entries cost $90 each, and can consist of as many 8 players with no additional fee. Each team will be guaranteed 8 games prior to the beginning of playoffs. Teams making the playoffs will then participate in a single elimination playoff format. Modified WIAA rules will be used. July 20: Soccer night with the Mallards 

The deadline for purchasing tickets for the The Waunakee Area Soccer Club’s fundraising night at the “Duck Pond” is July 20. The event is Aug. 3 beginning at 6:05 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through www.MallardsGroups.com. July 21: Meet the Schumacher chickens 

Schumacher Farm Park will host a meet the chickens session from 3-4:30 p.m. July 21. The community is invited to meet and greet the eight chickens, feed them and learn about them from Head Chicken Wrangler Bob Bennin.

July 21: Holy Wisdom concert 

Holy Wisdom Monastery, 4200 Hwy. M, will host Celebrating Benedict: A Piano Concert with Father Bob Koopmann OSB on Sunday, July 21 at 4 p.m. Pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff, W.A. Mozart, César Franck, Johannes Brahms, Maurice Ravel, and by Father Koopmann himself will be performed. Donations will be accepted at the door or online at www.benedictinewomen.org to support the mission of the Benedictine Women of Madison at Holy Wisdom Monastery. July 21: Schumacher Farm Hymn Sing

At 2 p.m. July 21, join Schumacher Farm Park for an old-fashioned hymn sing in the parlor of the restored 1908 farmhouse. Carolee Mayhak will accompany on the 1894 Sohmer Co upright. Light refreshments will be served. A $3 donation is requested. Members are free. Last week, this event was listed in error for July 14.

July 21: Garden Workshop: Cucumbers

Schumacher Farm will host a Garden Workshop at 3 p.m. July 21. Mary Collet, heirloom gardener, will lead a tour of the vegetable garden and a workshop about pickling summer garden product like beets, cucumbers and cabbage. A $3 donation is requested. July 23: CPR class 

Waunakee Area EMS will offer a CPR class Tuesday, July 23, at 6 p.m. at the EMS station for any interested residents of our district. You will receive a 2-year certification card from the American Heart Association at the Heartsaver AED level. There is a charge of $25 per person. Registration can be completed on our website www.waems.net or by calling (608) 849-7522.

July 27: Wauna Spike 

The Waunakee-Westport Lions Club will present Wauna Spike, a co-ed, six-person grass volleyball tournament July 27 at the Ripp Park Soccer Fields. People of all ages are eligible to participate. Pool competition begins at 8:30 a.m. and will run until roughly 1 p.m. Playoffs are expected to conclude at 5 p.m. Forms can be downloaded at waunafest.org or picked up at Neil’s Liquor, Rex’s Innkeeper and US Bank on Main Street. Completed entries will be entered into the tournament on a first-come basis. No refunds will be made after July 19. July 28: WaunaFest Classic Car Show 

A new WaunaFest Classic Car Show and Shine is planned for 9 a.m. July 28 at Centennial Park. Entry fee is $5 for the non-judged event and limited space is available. All money will be returned to the WaunaFest Committee. Look for the Pepsi signs for the car show as to where to enter off of Holiday Drive. The organizers suggest that cars get to the parking area as early as possible because streets will be shut down for the 11 a.m. WaunaFest Parade. At the conclusion of the parade, it will be more difficult to get in with vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the park.
