She attended the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973, but Queen Elizabeth II will not be at the iconic building’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

The NSW deputy premier, Andrew Stoner, announced on Thursday that Danish royals, Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary, will instead visit Sydney in October and attend a number of events being held to celebrate the Opera House’s anniversary.

Mr Stoner said the Danish royal couple embodied the ties between Australia and Denmark that were first forged by the construction of the Opera House more than 50 years ago.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming the Prince and Princess to Sydney and I encourage members of the community to come down to the Opera House in October and share in this significant celebration,” Mr Stoner said.

The Sydney Opera House’s chief executive, Louise Herron, said inviting members of the British royal family had been considered, but the Danish royal couple were the first choice.

“We did think about it and then we thought the thing is, well first of all we thought it’s probably going to be difficult for them to come at this time,” Ms Herron said.

“Because William and Kate will have just have had a baby so that would be unlikely that they would come.

“And the Queen we did think about, but then Prince Phillip was very sick so we thought well that’s probably unlikely.”

Ms Herron did not mention Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, but said Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were considered more appropriate royal guests.

“But actually the Danish royals were our first choice because of this Danish-Australian collaboration and the point is we’re reaching back in our history to launch forward for the future,” she said.

She also pointed out that Crown Princess Mary is “absolutely loved by the Australian public”.

The Opera House is planning a week of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the World Heritage-listed building including recreating the concert that officially opened the Opera House in 1973 in the forecourt on October 27. The ticketed concert will culminate, as it did in 1973, with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 performed by the Sydney Symphony and will also feature soloists from Opera Australia and the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs.

Other events announced on Thursday include an open day on October 20, an exhibition of Danish design and what Ms Herron said were “the Danish version of the Oscars”.

Ms Herron declined to reveal the cost of the the 40th anniversary events, but said it was not in the millions of dollars.

“There are elements of the celebrations that are being paid for by the Danes and there are elements that we are paying for and we have a very limited budget,” she said.

The chairman of the Sydney Opera House and News Limited chief executive, Kim Williams, had given a “very generous donation” to help fund the 40th anniversary program, Ms Herron said. “But we have a limited budget and we’re sticking to that budget.”
