RUNNING
Pocatello Trail Runs
Former Helenan Mike Wolfe led a group of local area runners at the Pocatello Trail Runs races in Idaho. Wolfe, now of Missoula, captured the 50-mile championship with a new course record of 7 hours, 43 minutes, 31 seconds.
John Halsteen placed 25th, out of 99 competitors, in 11:23:37. Other locals finishing the event were Alan Wintersteen (54th, 13:05), Charlie Sperry (74th, 14:24), Rich
DeSimone (81st, 15:24) and Scott Blum (84th, 15:35.)
The course, which is situated in the hills outside of Pocatello, is actually 52.3 miles, and consists of 12,600 feet of vertical gain.
In the 50K race (actually 35.4 miles, with 8,400 feet vertical gain), Helena’s Steve Engebrecht came in 16th, in 7:41:19. Also finishing were Tammie Engebrecht (33rd, 9:01) and Claudia Bickel (38th, 10:11).
Bryce 100 Mile Trail Run
Another local runner took part in the Bryce 100 Mile Trail Run, near Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah. Martin Miller completed the 100 mile course, which included 18,500 feet of elevation gain, in 32:41:40. Miller’s time was good enough for 82nd place, out of 114 runners.
TENNIS
Spring Team Tennis
Team No. 3 was crowned Spring Team Tennis Champion on Sunday at Helena’s Last Chance Tennis Center after a playoff against Team No. 4 and weeks of competition among four teams and over 30 local players. Members of the winning team included Dale Kassler, Peggy Manion, Joan Miles, Monica Aparicio, Mike Price and Don Reddig.
The competition was all doubles with national tennis rating program levels ranging from 3.0 to 4.5 levels. Teams consisted of six club members and during the season each team played a match against each of the other tennis teams.
The Spring Team Tennis competition was the second time the LCTA has offered the opportunity for members to participate in this unique competition. Club professional Doug Ruffin created the program to help members learn more about competing at all levels and among all age groups.
“It is gratifying to see how our members raised the level of competition this session and really had fun playing and competing, especially the junior members,” he said. “Tennis is truly a sport for a lifetime when teams have players who range in age from 13 to 70!”
Team tennis competition will start again in the fall. Ruffin will offer three sessions of clinics and lessons this summer, including special classes for beginners. Weeklong tennis camps for juniors and adults are scheduled for June 24 – 27. Contact Doug Ruffin for more information or to sign up at (360) 789-6664 or drotca@comcast.net.
