LANSING | The Youth and Teen Services Department at the Lansing Public Library announces its June Summer Reading Program events.

The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program is “Have Book Will Travel.” The program is a great way to keep reading skills up over the summer while having fun doing it. Every week that a youth participates in the program, whether they read a little or a lot, they will earn a fun incentive. All events are free of charge. The library is at 2750 Indiana Ave.

Here are the events for children birth through fifth grade:

Story time sign up begins June 10 for infants through age 5. The story time sessions meet weekly and will run from June 17 through July 25. The following sessions are available:

• 10:30 a.m. Mondays: birth to 2 years.

• 11:30 a.m. Mondays: birth to 2 years.

• 10:30 a.m. Wednesdays: 2-year-olds.

• 10:30 a.m. Thursdays: 3- to 5-year-olds.

• 11:45 a.m. Thursdays: 3- to 5-year-olds.

In addition, special story times will also be available. Sign-up is not required for these events:

• 6:30-7:30 p.m. June 5: Families are invited to participate in Music and Movement at the library. This program provides an opportunity to strengthen a child’s gross and fine motor skills, cognitive skills, listening skills and more. Attendees should wear comfortable clothes and be ready to move during this high-energy activity. All children must be accompanied by an adult and adults should be prepared to participate as well. Lynda Torres, of Lansing School District 158, will lead this event.

• 6:30-7:15 p.m. June 24: Bilingual English and Spanish Story Time is back. Spread the word about this fun family story time that incorporates Spanish and English stories. Elizabeth Boshears, of Lansing School District 158, will lead the story time.

Children in grades kindergarten through fifth are invited to participate in special craft times as well. Sign-up is required for these events:

• Noon-1:30 p.m. June 20: Travel back in time to ancient Egypt, the land of pharaohs and make a golden collar. Jeweled collars were the symbol of Egyptian royalty, and children can make one out of paper plates and a dash of paint.

• 12:30-1:30 p.m. June 26: All superheroes have their own special symbol … why not make your own? Join us for a super craft that will shine.

Children in grades kindergarten through fifth are also invited to participate in a weekly Lego Days session. Children will have the opportunity to make travel-themed creations that will be displayed in Youth and Teen Services. Sign-up is not required and the sessions will run from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Fridays, June 21 through July 26.

Children of all ages are invited to enjoy a movie at the library every Tuesday from June 18 through July 23. Movies will run from 12:30 to 3 p.m. No sign-up is required.

Teens in sixth through 12th grade are invited to participate in the following events. Sign-up is not required unless listed. Events are open to students in sixth through 12th grade unless noted.

• 2 p.m. June 17: Game Day is back. Stop by and play the Wii. If that’s not your style, board games such as Candyland, checkers and even Apples to Apples will be available.

• 2 p.m. June 18: Teens in sixth through eighth grade are invited to find out about the annual Battle of the Books. If you love books, here is your chance to compete against others to find out who knows more about books. Participants are required to read the 2014 Rebecca Caudill nominees and should be prepared to answer questions for each book at the annual Battle of the Books on July 29. Teens may enter as a team of four or just come to the meeting and get placed on a team.

• 2 p.m. June 19: Teens in eighth through 12th grade looking for service hours or job experience have an opportunity to assist the librarians and get a look at the behind-the-scenes action of the library world. Come to the meeting and hear about the opportunities. If you can’t make it to the orientation meeting, stop by the library at the Teen Desk for information. Sign-up is appreciated, but not required.

• 4 p.m. June 20: It’s Dr. Who Craft time. Stop by to fold your favorite Doctor and ready him to battle a Dalek or two and head off in a Tardis of your very own. When you’re done with that, feel free to make your choice of Dr. Who key chain. Sign-up is appreciated, but not required.

• 2 p.m. June 24: Nick Fury of SHIELD brings together a team of superhumans to form “The Avengers” to help save Earth from Loki and his army. This free event for sixth grade and up is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

• 12:30 p.m. June 26: Travel through the pages of comic books at the Superhero Event. Test your superhero powers, pose for a photo op or two and make a mini superhero to take home.
