All city of Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, state and federal offices and courts will be closed Monday for the Memorial Day holiday. Banks and liquor stores also will be closed. There will be no regular mail delivery or collection, but express mail will be delivered. Garbage collection well be pushed back one day all week, with Friday’s regular collection being made on Saturday. Port Authority will operate holiday service. Its Downtown service center will be closed, but its customer service line (412-442-2000) will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Here are some highlights of Memorial Day weekend activities throughout the area:
Oakland
Soldiers Sailors Memorial Hall Museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and has scheduled a series of free programs throughout the day.
The first program, at 10:30 a.m., honors nearly 300 Pennsylvania residents who died in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq.
At 2:30 p.m., there will be a program with a Civil War theme as Soldiers Sailors 6th Regiment USCT Drum Corps performs as a send off for Jim Smith. Mr. Smith is a re-enactor who is commemorating Civil War drummer Peter Guibert’s 185-mile walk in 1913 from Pittsburgh to Gettysburg on the 50th anniversary of the battle there.
Other activities include a Civil War flag exhibit, re-enactors, a DJ and children’s activities. Refreshments will be available for purchase and visitors are encouraged to bring blankets to picnic on the lawn.
Brighton Heights
The 27th Ward will salute veterans of all wars during its 65th Memorial Day observance 10 a.m. Monday in Brighton Heights Legion Park, Brighton Road at Shadeland and Davis avenues.
Spectators should bring lawn chairs.
The event will conclude with a free luncheon/picnic in the pavilion behind Emmanuel Christian Church, 1427 Davis Ave.
North Shore
Carnegie Science Center will honor veterans with a ceremony at the USS Requin submarine beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday.
The event will include a flyover by the Beaver County Stearman Association in a World War II-era biplane and petals cast on the water in honor of submarines that have gone down.
Visitors can watch the free program from the Ohio River bank. The science center is open throughout the weekend and is offering a 50 percent discount to active military personnel and up to three guests.
Carnegie
The borough’s annual parade will be at 2 p.m. Sunday along Main Street.
Coraopolis
The annual parade will begin at 1:30 p.m. Monday along Fifth Avenue.
Traffic patterns will change starting at 11 a.m. because of the parade. Fifth will be closed between Thorn Run Road and Montour Street. All side streets will be closed.
The detour will be Fourth Avenue, which will be converted into two-way use between Thorn Run and Ferree Street.
Parking for vehicles picking up parade participants will be on Fifth between Chestnut and Montour streets.
Cranberry
Sgt. Jeff Cole, U.S. Army and Iraqi war veteran, the Cranberry VFW Post 879 color guard, the Ohio Valley Marine Corps League Detachment 882 color guard and rifle salute and a presentation of memorial wreaths will be featured during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Sunday in North Boundary Park.
White doves will be released in remembrance of POW-MIAs.
Forest Hills
The Forest Hills Lions Club will hold a Memorial Day ceremony to honor veterans Monday.
The ceremony will take place at the veterans monument next to the borough building, 2071 Ardmore Blvd.
State and local officials will pay tribute to veterans, and refreshments will be served during the event, which starts at 11 a.m.
Hampton
The Hampton American Legion, Post 296, will host a remembrance ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Hampton Veterans Memorial next to the Hampton Community Center. The Hampton High School Band, local Girl and Boy Scouts and veterans will participate.
Heidelberg
A ceremony honoring the borough’s servicemen and women will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Heidelberg Park’s military memorials. Lunch will be provided after the ceremony, courtesy of the Heidelberg recreation committee.
Irwin
The Irwin/North Huntingdon American Legion will step off its annual Memorial Day Parade at 9 a.m. Monday near the Immaculate Conception Church at Second and Oak streets in Irwin.
After the parade, a program will take place at the Irwin Cemetery. The Irwin Male Chorus will perform. The main speaker will be John Polivka, former U.S. history teacher at Norwin High School.
Kennedy
The annual parade, sponsored by American Legion Post 464, will form at 8:30 a.m. Monday at 1806 Pine Hollow Road, formerly the Kenmawr School. The parade route will be Pine Hollow and Fairhaven roads to the war memorial where the American Legion will conduct a brief ceremony.
The American Legion will honor active duty servicemen and women and reservists.

Lawrenceville
The Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association will hold a parade beginning at 10 a.m. Monday, beginning at 40th and Butler streets and proceeding along Butler to the cemetery, where a service will take place at 11:15 a.m. A picnic will follow, with food, a charity raffle, face painting, a Civil War campsite and more.
Sewickley
There will be a memorial service at 10:30 a.m. today at the Coast Guard Station dock at the end of McKown Road in Glen Osborne.
And, there will be a veterans memorial service at 11 a.m. Sunday in Sewickley United Methodist Church.
Sewickley’s 122nd Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. Monday featuring the Sewickley police, the Northgate Flames Marching Band, the Quaker Valley Middle School Juggling Club, the Wonders Unicycle Club, Boy Scouts Cub Scouts from Troop 243, the North Hills Historic Auto Club, the River City Brass Band and the Red Knights Firefighters Motorcycle Club.
