A Grade I listed column has re-opened to the public for the first time in 50 years.

Devonport Column in Plymouth has undergone a £685,000 restoration project which has lasted 10 months.

It was built in 1824 to celebrate the founding of Devonport as an independent town.

The 124ft (38m) high structure has a viewing platform at the top. The Heritage Lottery Fund has paid for the restoration work.

Despite Devonport previously being an independent town it is now part of the city of Plymouth.
