Intelligence Report Listed Marathon Finish as Potential Attack Site

An intelligence report of April 10 said that the April 15 Boston Marathon could be the site of a terrorist attack, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The report, prepared by the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, said that the marathon finish line was “an area of increased vulnerability.”

The report also said, “The possibility exists that [homegrown violent extremists] could attempt an attack by using simple improvised explosive devices or small-arms tactics against easily accessible low-security targets,” the Los Angeles Times reports.

The Boston Regional Intelligence Center culls information from federal, state and local law-enforcement agencies. In its April 10 report, it said the FBI had no knowledge of specific threats against the marathon.

A Massachusetts State Police spokesman downplayed the significance of the April 10 report, because of its lack of specifics.

“The assessment about start and finish lines being potential targets was considered and reflected in security plans for the event, as they have been every year,” said David Procopio. “It is akin to saying, in general terms, that airplanes are an attractive target to terrorists.”
