For those of us die-hard Midtown Montgomery residents, the first Sunday afternoon in May of each year is permanently marked on our calendars for Old House Expo.

The Expo was the 1985 brainchild of historic preservationist Marilyn Sullivan, who wanted to showcase the plight of the Brittan-Dennis House located at 507 Columbus Street. The Brittan House is one of Montgomery’s earliest brick residences and today stands beautifully restored by Landmarks Foundation just several blocks north of the Capitol complex.

Throughout the decades of past Expos, hundreds of homes have found enthusiastic new owners eager to experience historic neighborhood and community living. The 2013 Old House Expo selection of available homes is, as usual, an assortment of sizes, architectural styles, price ranges and locations.

This year one of Montgomery’s most notable 20th century architectural jewels is available. Although lovingly known locally as the “the Flintstone House,” its official name is Flight One and is located at 3126 Jasmine Road in McGhee Estates. It was designed by Dean Bryant Vollendorf of the University of Oklahoma in 1963 for Bill Brennan, a then radio station entrepreneur.

Vollendorf designed this Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Prairie house, as well as a similar structure for the local radio station WBAM on the Troy Highway. The house is constructed in a horseshoe shape of rough-hewn marble from Sylacauga. The four bedroom house features mahogany accent walls, unusually-shaped rooms and skylights as well as sliding glass walls that open onto a central pool and patio area.

Spacious living areas, quality construction, large trees, friendly neighbors, short commuting time, convenient amenities — just to name a few of the advantages — make purchasing an older home a win/win situation. So come join us on Sunday afternoon, May 5, and become an Old House Expo groupie!

Who — The touring audience on any Old House Expo afternoon is comprised of old house lovers, community preservationists, and nosy neighbors! Each house is occupied by a host who is knowledgeable about the house and a realtor that can make your old house loving dreams come true.

What — To be eligible for Old House Expo, houses must be at least 50 years old, located in a historic district, be of notable architecture and, last but the most important, be for sale! Anywhere from 8 to 20 houses are usually listed on the Old House Expo tour. Sale prices for this year’s home lineup range anywhere from $55,000 for a start-up home to $499,000 for a fabulous architectural jewel.

When — As always, Old House Expo will be on the first Sunday afternoon in May (May 5). Homes are open from 1 p.m.
until 5 with no charge for this fun happening.
