Bright art has adorned the decaying walls of an 18th century merchant’s house in Great Yarmouth.

Work by local artist John Kiki was on show at 133 King Street today (Saturday), ahead of the historic building’s transformation into an artists’ hub at the heart of Yarmouth’s developing cultural quarter.

The building, near the recently refurbished St George’s Theatre, has been described as a “rare survival”, an elegant example of a lavish 18th century home.

It was converted into a shop and accommodation in 1885 and most recently home to Skippings, a drapers shop, but has been empty since 1998.

The Heritage Lottery Funded refurbishment by the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust will see it transformed into the coastal town’s first art gallery, with four artists’ studios and a three bedroom family unit – the revenue from which will pay for the building’s ongoing maintenance and help subsidise the gallery.
