Old Salt spring Kingfish event draws near

The Madeira Beach-based Old Salt Fishing Club is gearing up for its 20th spring King of the Beach tournament on April 27. Over the years, anglers have caught some real monster kingfish, including a 55.76-pounder in 2006, although the average weight of winning fish has been 41.11 pounds. With a first-place prize of $20,000, the King of the Beach is one of the largest kingfish events in Florida. Old Salt members who register before April 22 pay $195 and nonmembers $215. Those members who register at the event will pay $215 and nonmembers $235. The club also needs help with missing information in its record book. Wild West king series continues

Jim Naset and Team Pro Marine landed a 27.99-pound kingfish to win the season opener of the Wild West Kingfish Tournament Series April 6. Naset and company won $8,300 and now lead 27 other teams in the four-tournament series. Team Delosa’s Doughmaker with Jim Breazeale finished second with a 27.66-pound fish worth $4,980, followed by Brian Hasson‘s Team Kindred Spear-It with a 21.38-pounder worth $3,320. Check out the weigh-in of the second series event at 5:30 p.m. April 21 at the John’s Pass Village bell tower.

Swimming

17 to attempt up 24-miler in the bay

Seventeen swimmers will try to swim 24 miles from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge north to the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa today as part of the 16th Tampa Bay Marathon Swim. Local swimmers include Chris Burke, 50, St. Petersburg; Mark Smitherman, 55, and Matthew Thomas, 35, both of Clearwater; Pat Marzulli, 64, Indian Rocks Beach; Ann von Spiegelfeld, 51, and Bart Cobb, 57, both of Tampa. This event has been listed as one of the 30 “World Swimming Majors” with a distance and degree of difficulty similar to the English Channel. To learn more, go to distancematters.com.
