Welland hosting Ontario Cup basketball championships

Hoops excitement won’t end with March Madness and the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball championships taking place south of the border.

More than 80 teams from across the province are coming to Welland later this week to compete in the Ontario Cup boys under-12 boys basketball championships. Niagara’s third provincial tournament in as many years, the three-day major atom boys tournament tips off Friday with action taking place at Eastdale, Jean Vanier as well as at the Niagara College Athletic Centre.

The field competing at the Ontario Basketball-sanctioned tournament in Welland tournament is made up of club and rep teams from communities with local basketball programs. “Once again, we are very excited to be hosting and staging these championships. The support and sponsorship that we receive locally for hosting this event, with more than 1,000 athletes and coaches, has been outstanding.” Chris Charlebois, the Niagara Basketball Association’s manager of events, operations and community, said.

“Ontario Basketball recognizes that support and how well basketball is received in Niagara, which is why the Ontario Cup is returning to the area for a third straight year.”

The Niagara Sport Commission will also be hosting the Ontario Cup juvenile under-17 boys basketball championships May 24-26.
