The sanctions were introduced in 2002 following violence and human rights abuses Western governments blamed on President Robert Mugabe and his allies. The EU had put 112 people and 11 companies on the sanctions list but it had already started to trim it down in February, as Zimbabwe’s main political parties had reached an agreement on drafting a new constitution.
