Neighborhood Associations are holding Actual Value Initiative meetings (and general meetings) all week, there are some informative readings and panel discussions at the free library, and City Council is taking up resolutions on real estate taxes, among other things. Monday, March 18

Northern Liberties Fundraising Committee. The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting so the fundraising committee can explore new avenues for NLNA events and program funding.

East Kensington General Meeting. The East Kensington Neighborhood Association will hold a general meeting at Philadelphia Brewing Company.

Mt. Airy’s Architectural Heritage. Joseph Minardi, author of Historic Architecture in Northwest Philadelphia, 1690-1930s, will give a lecture on the historic architecture in the Mt. Airy section of the city.

Tuesday, March 19

Clean and Green Meeting. The South of South Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting discussing “green” projects in that section of the city. They include potential open space at 17th and Carpenter, E-cycling events, street cleaning and rec center partnerships.

Urban Design Committee Meeting. The Northern Liberties Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting on urban design in the area.

HR Considerations for Small Businesses. There will be a panel discussion at the Free Library of Philadelphia’s Central Branch to help small business owners figure out payroll and other HR considerations.

City Council. The Committee of the Whole of Philadelphia City Council will hold public hearings on collecting delinquent real estate taxes owed to the city—this will come up in the form of several resolutions.

Wednesday, March 20

Zoning Committee meeting. The South of South zoning committee will meet to discuss several projects, mostly erection of homes.

Sustainability Committee Meeting. The Queen Village Neighborhood Association will open a meeting to all issues of sustainability.

Foods the Shaped History. Dr. Mitchell will discuss the demand for certain beverages have shaped the modern world.

The Zoot Suit in American Culture. The University of Pennsylvania History Department will present the history of the zoot suit, “embraced by African American, Latino, working-class youth, and “swing kids” in the 1940s”—and eventually led to controversies after the zoot suit riot in Los Angeles.

City Council. The Committee of the Whole will again discuss resolutions regarding collecting delinquent real estate taxes.

Thursday, March 21

PSA 1 Community Meeting.
Police Service Area 1 will hold their community meeting at the SOSNA office in South Philly, where residents will hear about recent crime activity and be given the opportunity to speak with police officers.

General Meeting. The Fishtown Neighborhood Association will hold a meeting to talk the 2013 chili cookoff, district updates and the Actual Value Initiative. A moderated question and answer session will take place regarding AVI afterwards.

General Meeting. The Queen Village Neighborhood Association will hold a general meeting, where a representative will explain how to use 311 in the most efficient way.

City Council. The Joint Committees on Public Safety and Education will consider a resolution regarding the dismissal or release of students to parents, guardians and other individuals at Philly public schools.
